Mathiew Loisel
My name is Mathieu Loisel. I’m looking to form meaningful connections with people from all walks of life. The greatest lesson I’ve learned during 16 years of being incarcerated is to always value friendships and relationships and to take the time to nurture these connections.
Along the way, I have lost contact with family and friends – sometimes people simply grow apart. Nevertheless, I’ll always be grateful for the time we had; I’ll always love them from a distance. There is beauty in the struggle and strength to be found in loss. I like to think that I’m a much stronger and more caring man because of all the people in my life – past and present – that blessed me with their caring, thoughtful, and compassionate presence.
I’m currently attending the University of Scranton where I’m pursuing an MBA with dual concentrations in Finance and Business Analytics. Education has been the vehicle through which I have found healing, my identity, and my call to be of service to my community. I am painfully aware of the impact my crime had on my community, and that is why I feel morally obligated to provide healing to my community through acts of service. I can never right my wrongs. I can, however, spread love and joy instead of hurt and trauma.
Besides working on my Master’s degree and performing acts of service, both in and outside the prison, I work as a Math and English instructor at the Education Department, volunteer for Hospice and as a peer-support mental health worker, and as a prison legal and financial advisor. The job that is dear to my heart, however, is that of a service dog trainer for VetDogs of America. Training dogs for disabled vets is one way I can give back to my community.
I enjoy reading, writing, and being active in the progressive movement as a social justice activist, writing take articles on these topics for various publishers. Hopefully, you find my profile interesting and decide to reach out. The experiences we share with others are what colors our lives with meaning. It is my hope that the experiences we might create will leave a lasting transformative impact on our lives.
